DAILY TELEGRAPH Fashion designer Johanna Pihl pushes the boundaries

Johanna Pihl is a Swedish artist based in Stockholm, with a background in design and fashion. Her art draws from the passion for lines and forms.

After completing her degree at the London College of Fashion, Johanna gained recognition by winning the Young Fashion Industry Award. This achievement allowed her to establish her own clothing brand, which she successfully ran for several years with shows in Stockholm, Copenhagen and a showroom in New York.

Throughout her career, her passion for lines and forms has been a driving source of inspiration, which a few years ago made her transition from her design background to the realm of art. Drawn to the form of expression within abstract art, Johanna now focuses on that creative process that enables her to create timeless works that lasts for years to come

ABOUT THE PROCESS

Johanna Pihl’s work is based on the fascination with lines and shapes. Two extremes and each other’s opposites that form their own language, but explain the same thing. Do the two live in a conflict or in a cooperation? By exploring the balance between them, Pihl creates minimalistic pieces with an abstract approach.

Like a floor plan, Pihl let a construction take shape, where surfaces and lines are allowed to emerge. How they are placed becomes significant and eventually everything begins to be questioned. A process takes place where she breaks them up and reshape them in an intention to discover new dimensional possibilities and connections for them to be in. The corrections are left visible and show clear traces in the search for new relationships. It is a process where every step, every adjustment, tells a story and creates additional important dimensions in the works.
